Background:
A photo‐journalist with over 15 years experience I have covered a wide range of stories and had photographs published worldwide in books, periodicals, newspapers and on television. In addition I write and have provided many articles and stories to news media.
As a photographer I have covered many subjects from school fêtes to fashion shows and concerts. In terms of hard news I have photographed riots, demonstrations and political events as well as numerous road accidents and plane crashes. As a news photographer working in the south‐east of England I was often the first to arrive at many incidents including the Afghan hijack at Stansted airport in 2000.
In 2001 I was the only photographer to capture an escaped ostrich in the east of London. The bird, owned by a local schoolboy, and named Godzilla made the papers around the world including the Salt Lake Tribune and the Southeast Missourian in the United States to The Herald in Australia. In addition to newspaper coverage, pictures of Godzilla the ostrich also featured on the satirical quiz show Have I Got News for You.
As the global recession began to bite in late 2008 I began to write and sub‐edit stories for Xinhua news agency. This led to a year long contract in Beijing, China and a return to a country I have visited many times and photographed extensively.
My professional career has reinforced technical skills in many areas, from the use of Adobe Photoshop and Fotostation to using content management systems during my employment at Xinhuanet. A self confessed technophile, I have a strong enthusiasm for technology, especially new technologies such as personal computers, the Internet and smartphones. My passion for technology extends to social networking and Web 2.0. As such I keep abreast of latest technological developments through programmes such as BBC Click and online platforms including CNET and ZDNet amongst others.
Like many I also use many social networking sites such as Facebook and the more professional LinkedIn. However I try to use them in a productive way, creating meaningful connections and networks between people. As well as running a regularly updated news blog and a Twitter feed, I also use micro‐blogging as a means to follow news stories and information feeds. I have had some television experience both through my university study, which concentrated on video and television production, and some contract work.
Having returned from China after nearly two years based in Beijing, I am currently based in London.
